I Miss My Sat-er-in
SaturnFans.com • May 30, 2002

My son bought a new Saturn in 1993 or 1994, I'm not certain of the year. The Saturn was still going strong in 2000 until the day my daughter-in-law drove to pick up my two grandsons from school and someone ran a red light, hit them broadside and totalled the Saturn. They all had some bumps and bruises but nothing life threatening thank goodness.

My son was at home with my granddaughter Breanna, who was four years old at the time. He received the call there had been an accident and took Breanna (nicknamed "Breezy") with him to check on his family. I went by their home later when my son called and told me what had happened. Grandma had to check to make sure everyone was okay.

When I arrived, Breezy was standing outside, looking lost and forlorn. As soon as I approached her, her little lip started trembling and big tears appeared in her eyes and she started running to me. I picked her up and asked what was wrong and she said, "Granny, I loved my Sat-er-in. I miss my Sat-er-in". Then she just boo-hooed like her little heart was breaking. We couldn't help but burst out laughing at her pronounciation of Saturn and then realized this was the car she had ridden in since birth, her car seat was in it and that was her car as far as she was concerned... and it was gone.

Everytime I think of this I have to smile and think what a great TV commercial this would make for Saturn.

They say fact is sometimes weirder than fiction, well how about this? When my son arrived at the accident scene in another car, he pulled over and stopped and was about to get out of the car when someone ran into the rear of his car -- you guessed it. The same person charged with wrecking my daughter-in-law and totalling the Saturn ran into my son. The lady's car was driveable enough for the officer at the scene to ask her to move her car out of the traffic to the side of the road while waiting for the wrecker. The officer just shook his head in amazement, walked over and took her car keys.

A Lifelong Saturn Fan

In September 1999, my very first car died from complications from a timing belt. I searched Ford, Chevy, Honda, Toyota, VW, and just about every other make out there before coming to Saturn. My unique experience began when we called Stan at Saturn of Wilmington, NC. Stan suggested that we set up an appointment and let him know upfront what type of car we were looking for.

After picking a good time and giving him some basic details we went down to the dealership. To be perfectly honest, I didn't know anything about Saturn until I first stepped foot into the dealership. Stan greeted us and had us sit down and talk for about an hour or so before we even really talked about Saturn or a particular model. He had paperwork ready with details describing different items that people typically came to Saturn looking for, and some basic items to inform me about the brand.

The first impression of the experience blew me away. From all of the horrific sales pitches at all the other dealerships, this approach was completely different. There was no pressure, no hassle, it was quite amazing. After about two or three more hours, we finally had decided that the SL2 was probably the best option. Stan took us to an empty parking lot, and then proceeded to go over the entire car, its features and how everything worked. Keep in mind now this was just the test drive. I was really impressed with how nicely put together the whole package was. I loved the driving feel of a Saturn and really, it was night and day from what I was coming from.

I finally picked out a dark blue SL2, and about seven hours from the first greeting, I was ready to sign and drive. The entire Saturn "team" came out and introduced themselves, sang to me, and then took my picture.

About one year later, I was driving on Interstate 40, in rural North Carolina. The sun had just gone down, and it was just starting to get pretty dark. Some unaware motorist thought it would be a great idea to merge onto a 70mph highway from the side of the road without looking around a curve and without having any lights on. I swerved to avoid the car, and subsequently I started a flat spin. The Saturn held well to the car, but came to an unfortunate impact at the median pole around 45-55mph. The car impacted from the rear, crushing much of the rear of the car, and shattering the windows.

The car saved my life, without a doubt. I loved the car, and would still have it today if not for the accident. I walked away without a scratch.

It only took about two days to find out I was going to get another Saturn. It wasn't a hard decision. How could I choose another brand, after this car had done so much for me? I picked out a 2000 grey bronze SL2. It was a dealer's car, had about 9,000 miles on it. Stan again set me up with a great deal, and the extended warranty. I loved this car just as much as the first one, and felt right at home with it.

About two more years passed, and Saturn had called me after a scheduled oil change on my 2000 SL2. They told me the L-Series and many other 2002s were being cleared out, and that they had shortage on used Saturns. I came down to the dealership and again found Stan for the third time. I picked out a dark green L300, with leather, V6, power everything... the works! It is by far the nicest car I have ever owned, and the nicest Saturn I have ever been in. They knocked about $4,000 off the sticker (which isn't like Saturn) and set me up with the GM's 0.0% for 60 months.

Over the past several years I have come to really feel very loyal to the Saturn family and my dealership. I frequently keep myself updated on the brand's changes and the direction it is taking. I feel I will continue to be loyal to Saturn for many different reasons, but most of all because I am always treated with the utmost respect when dealing with them.

On every oil change, question, or anything else that arises, Saturn is quick to remedy the problem, and is more then courteous with their service. It's also a good feeling to know that the employees are satisfied. Most of the employees I dealt with almost five years ago are still working at the same dealership.

I will continue to be a life-long Saturn fan.
